Dune: Awakening PvP Changes – Conflict Mode Explained
Dune: Awakening PvP Changes
The desert sands of Arrakis shift once more, with a crucial update for survival MMO hopefuls.
Dune: Awakening is altering its dangerous landscape, responding directly to player feedback from recent tests.
Full PvP in the game's most perilous zones will now be a conscious choice, not a forced encounter.
This change specifically targets the Deep Desert and Shipwreck regions, notorious for their high-risk, high-reward gameplay.
Players must now manually enable a "Conflict Mode" to engage in or become targets for player-versus-player combat in these areas.
Outside of this mode, these zones will function under a more protective ruleset, allowing for exploration and resource gathering without constant threat.
This pivot aims to broaden the game's appeal, catering to both hardcore PvP enthusiasts and those seeking a more cooperative or solo survival experience.
The studio behind the project emphasizes this as part of an ongoing dialogue with its community to shape the world of Arrakis.
It represents a significant design evolution, seeking to balance the harsh lore of Dune with accessible multiplayer fun.
The spice must flow, but now, perhaps, with slightly less bloodshed for those who wish it.

Players who avoided forced PvP in Dune: Awakening are getting what they've asked for.
In an April developer update, Funcom announced it's turning off PvP in Hagga Basin and introducing separate endgame instances for PvP and PvE, moving the game toward a PvE-first design.
The change comes after months of player frustration over the Deep Desert's endgame setup, where the best rewards were locked behind zones that left solo and PvE-focused players vulnerable to ambushes.
Funcom initially tried to compromise: just weeks after launch in June 2025 it split the Deep Desert into a PvP-enabled northern half and a PvE-only southern half, and continued to tweak the system across several updates.
Those adjustments didn't fully resolve complaints, so the studio says it will rethink the approach and make endgame PvP optional by segregating players into dedicated PvP and PvE instances.
Practically, this should let players chase endgame content without the constant threat of being ganked, while still preserving a space for those who enjoy open PvP. Funcom’s note suggests more iteration is likely as they refine this new direction.
Dune: Awakening PvE Focus Shift
Funcom is shifting Dune: Awakening toward a clearer PvE-first design after finding that more than 80% of lifetime players stick to PvE content.
They say the previous overlap between PvE and PvP—especially in the Deep Desert—didn't match their goals, so they're reworking how those modes coexist.
Smaller fixes arrived in Chapter 3 via new repeatable gameplay loops, and four major changes are planned next.
Key changes:
1) All PvP-designated zones in Hagga Basin will be turned off on official servers.
2) Every official world will offer two separate Deep Desert instances that players can opt into:
- A PvE-only instance for survival and exploration with no player combat anywhere, including shipwrecks.
- A PvP instance (rows B–I) preserving high-stakes, open-world conflict; to balance risk, mining and spice yields in these PvP areas will be multiplied by 2.5.
By splitting the experiences, Funcom intends to let explorers and spice hunters avoid constant player threats while giving PvP-focused players a dedicated, rewarding arena.
Self-hosted servers (experimental)
Funcom will begin testing self-hosted servers so communities can run private worlds with custom rules and settings (resource rates, base piece caps, item durability, base decay, etc.).
The initial release is intentionally early to gather feedback and is currently experimental and somewhat technical: it requires a Windows Pro machine with Hyper-V to host the server inside a Linux virtual machine.
Minimum hardware guidance (for 1–4 players on a single map, typical activity):
- OS: Windows 10 64-bit Pro with Hyper-V
- Memory: 20 GB RAM
- CPU: Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600
- Network: Broadband internet
- Storage: 100 GB (SSD recommended)
Funcom warns that CPU and RAM requirements grow quickly as player counts and active maps increase.
Timing
No firm release date was given; self-hosted server testing should begin soon, and the PvP/PvE separation will arrive as part of the upcoming 1.3.20.0 patch.
